Cross-compile i386->alpha

I guess this isn't something that people do often, but, for whoever is
interested:

I get "missing separator" at arch/alpha/Makefile:35 when I do make config
for a host i386 cross-compiling for an Alpha. The line is:

$(shell $(AS) --version >& ./GAS_VER)
