I make kernels from read-only sources by:

1) modifying Makefile to create empty compile.h, version.h during make
config as root, and a few other mods to get the new versions of these
files to go to the right place

2) cd /usr/tmp
cp -srdp /vol/linux/usr/src/linux-x.x.x .
cd linux-x.x.x
touch .depend
make zImage modules | tee make.log

The `touch .depend' prevents all the .depend nonsense.
