kernel changes and software upgrade

I have noticed that quite a few people are unaware that as the kernel
changes, software that is dependent upon the /proc or other kernel
features become deprecated. While there is a list of each package and
respective version in the Documentation directory, perhaps someone should
implement a script as part of the make process to check the current
software and even warn about it.
