console driver problem?

Forgive me if this is not actually a kernel probelm, but I'm not
quite sure what else it could be!
I'm currently running 2.0.33 over a Red Hat 5.0 installation,
which has been moderately "adjusted". I had this problem as well with the
2.0.31 kernel, so I'm not sure if it's kernel related or a problem with
mingetty. I might also mention that this has happened on all three of the
machines that I administer (all three are basic Gateway 2000 setups, with
ATI Rage II+ video cards and Ensoniq AudioPCI (go OSS! :) sound cards).
Basically I'm running the default Red Hat 5.0 virtual console
setup with six of them running mingetty on /dev/tty[1-6]. After having
been up for several days, one of the virtual consoles (and sometimes more,
although it's only happened to two at most, before I rebooted for some
other reason) will stop interpreting almost all control characters (e.g.
^M, ^?, ^H...). So whenever you type in your username, and press enter,
all you get is a ^M, or if you mistype it and backspace, you get a ^?.
I've searched www.dejanews.com and altavista.digital.com and
haven't been able to find anything related (although I may not be looking
for the right thing!). Has anyone else experienced this problem? The
rest of the system is pretty average, P55C@166Mhz, Intel Triton I/II
chipset, 32Mb RAM, 3.5Gb Quantum Fireball & generic ATAPI CD-ROM, and a
3com ethernet card.
I compiled 2.0.33 and added only what I needed (nothing
experimental and really no extra frills), but even the 2.0.31 kernel
straight from Red Hat experienced the same problems, so like I said
earlier, I may just need a newer mingetty? I've got mingetty-0.9.4-5
currently, and I haven't run across a newer one (although I didn't really
look for it exactly, but still I haven't seen a newer one anywhere).
Like I said, if it's a documented problem, and EVERYONE but me
knows about it already, just kick me in the right direction, and I
apologize for wasting time! :) Thanks...
