showing my ignorance, by user space do you mean the application program or a
"helper program" that ties into the kernel but runs in user mode rather then
kernel mode?

I would not want every program to have to have the code to map keys, etc (think
of the nightmare of syncing them).

The current keyboard mapping happens where (kernel/userspace) It seems to me
that the new mapping should happen the same place.
