2.1.xx sync hangs (typically after rm -rf)

I have noticed on 2.1.xx kernels on different architectures that sometimes
the syncing no longer works typically after I do a rm -rf of a directory.
Only cure is a reboot.

Yesterday I noticed that, in another session, a process was cd'ed into
that directory.

Could there be a correlation between those facts?

(removing a directory underneath a process and then no longer being able
to sync data).

Does this ring a bell?

Another thing I noticed is that loading via kmod of unix.o forks processes
until out of memory (on i386 2.1.105) and leaves a zombie modprobe for
net-pf-1 (on sparc 2.1.106). At least, I suspect that net-pf-1 might be
unix.o.
