What looks like TRASH to us doesn't always look that way to the computer.

As to the media type, the msdos fs used to use it... at which point it was
discovered that not all versions and variants of DOS bother to set it
correctly.

So we have to execute the boot block (read: *boot* it) or interpret it
(faster to just do a full partition scan...) to find out?
