Directories being rewritten as device files! HELP!

I just in the last 20 minutes had several files and directories
on my RedHat-5.0 kernel 2.0.34 linux box get rewritten as device
files. For example

/boot is now +boot with filesize of 111,99
/root/bin is now !bin with filesize of 304985K
/home/staff/jkinsley/.tin/.tinrc is now +tinrc with filesize of 83,46

and so on.

The only error messages are the following found in my kernel log:

Jul 7 02:11:57 jasmin kernel: EXT2-fs warning (device 03:01): ext2_free_blocks: bit already cleared for block 61910
Jul 7 02:13:48 jasmin kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
Jul 7 02:13:48 jasmin kernel: 03:01: rw=0, want=1416940605, limit=233824
Jul 7 02:14:08 jasmin kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
Jul 7 02:14:08 jasmin kernel: 03:01: rw=0, want=1416940605, limit=233824
Jul 7 02:14:09 jasmin kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
Jul 7 02:14:09 jasmin kernel: 03:01: rw=0, want=1416940605, limit=233824
Jul 7 02:14:28 jasmin kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
Jul 7 02:14:28 jasmin kernel: 03:01: rw=0, want=394269, limit=233824
Jul 7 02:14:28 jasmin kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
.....
Jul 7 02:22:19 jasmin kernel: 03:01: rw=0, want=1416940605, limit=233824
Jul 7 02:24:43 jasmin kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
Jul 7 02:24:43 jasmin kernel: 03:01: rw=0, want=394269, limit=233824
Jul 7 02:24:43 jasmin kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
Jul 7 02:24:43 jasmin kernel: 03:01: rw=0, want=394269, limit=233824

and so on for about 70K.

In addition, I am unable to login as any user period either on
the console or via telnet. I'm afraid that if the machine goes
down, it won't come back up. I have managed to pull /boot and
/root/bin off my other server at a remote location, but I'm not
certain what will happen using the contents of the /boot dir of
another machine.

Please Cc: any replies to jkinsley@bticc.net. That is my address
on the remote server. Thatway if this one dies, I can still get
mail.

Regards,
Jerry
