Well, for what it's worth, our company's server is running on
2.1.101 (more detailed hw&sw configuration later) and cdrecord
(I'm not using any front-ends) works just fine. So if you have
started with 2.1.102, you could always try .101 and see what
happens.

I have heard of all kinds of SCSI-related problems with newer
2.1.x kernels so I haven't have guts to upgrade :)

Your problems might also be due to a broken writer. We had HP
6020 earlier and it started to complain all kinds of errors and
made broken CDs. I believe its buffer memories were broken or
something like that -- that happened to a friend of mine
too. Our new Yamaha CD-RW works just fine.
