APM and console in 2.1.109

This may be known, but I don't remember seeing it.

2.1.109 seems to have developed a bug I've only seen in windows before.
Console screen blanking with APM works fine except that it can't unblank
again. It nicely switches my monitor to standby mode, but the only way to
get out of it seems to be to start X (blind).

SVGATextMode doesn't work. Running an svgalib based program doesn't work.
Switching into X brings it back, but the monitor goes back into standy as
soon as I switch out.

Firstly, is there any way to get my ttys back or do I need to reboot?
Secondly, does anyone know how to fix it or am I going to have to go back
to 2.1.103 (the last kernel that has been stable for me)?

TIA
