If you use modular sound, then you can put a line like
options sound post-install aumix -L
into /etc/modules.conf, then store the settings in /etc/aumixrc. If
you're using a monolithic sound driver, then you could run a mixer program
from your init scripts. You can get aumix through
http://jpj.net/~trevor/aumix.html, but there are several similar programs
on SunSITE in /pub/Linux/apps/sound/mixers/.
