Off-topic or not this entire subject area is (IMHO) extremely critical
to the proper positioning of Linux in the enterprise computing arena.

There is a reasonably active group working on LDAP now. The following
URL will be helpful: http://www.rage.net/ldap

My group is currently focusing on integrating LDAP and Kerberos to
form what will be in my mind an alternative to the Active Directory
structure being proposed for NT. Hopefully more open and consistent
with standards.
