Problems with rm -rf after upgrading to 2.1.108,110 from 2.0.34

We just recently upgraded from 2.0.34 to 2.1.108 due to system
instability. The experimental kernels seem to be far more stable on our
SMP system:
Dual Pentium II 333 (Supermicro P2DLF)
256Megs of 10ns SDRAM
7gig IDE Maxtor hard drive

After upgrading the systems, access to the file system (ext2) fails when
root runs an rm -rf. It seems to be random to whether it succeeds. When
it fails the rm is "D" state as well as any processes that try to write to
the filesystem afterwards. We've just upgraded to 2.1.110 and the problem
persists. If anyone has any information, similar experiences, or solutions
please let us know. Thank you.
