Hard lockups - X found with the smoking gun, kernel innocent (mostly)

In short: new ASUS PII MB, PCI S3 Trio64 from old 486. Under X, I got
screen dirt once in a while, and hard (no pinging) lockups _much_ more
often than I like to see with Linux. Note that lockups came quite a bit
faster under 2.1.x than under 2.0.x. When I got my first lockup under
2.0, I bought a new AGP video card, and 'poof!' - no more lockups.

In my 3 wonderful years with Linux, this is the third time I've caught X
holding the smoking gun... _this_ looks like a job for... Kernel Man!
Strange source code from another planet, with powers and abilities far
beyond those of mortal OS's. Able to track and control video mode
switches (in a single bound, no less), yada yada, you get the picture. ;-)

Oh yeah - 2.1.x is _solid_ for me, now.
