Agreed, Linux defaults should be sane.
I guess we disagree about what's sane..... :-)
One way or another linux-2.0 caught bad hardware through "sig11 while
compiling the kernel" a lot more often than the then-current 1.2.13.
We didn't do anything about that.
Same here linux-2.1.x is a little more sensitive to bad hardware than
2.0.
Yes, silent corruption is VERY bad. But the same was true for those
sig11 ones. You usually got a sig11 while compiling the kernel, but
most of the time you'd just get a silent corruption somewhere.
I think it's annoying that I have to recompile my ncr module to get
more than 5Mb per second out of my "expensive" scsi setup. Same goes
for having to enable DMA by hand after having installed a new
distribution.
