Do we in fact need to run kerneld? Why/ Why not?

Hi there...
I noticed recently that someone stated very clearly - 'kerneld is not
needed on 2.1.111'. Now, can anyone explain why/why not it is needed?
Does kerneld do anything besides being a module autoloader? (a function
which the kernel has assumed for itself...)
