A Dell Precision with a 486DX/33Mhz with 33Mhz and 2 hard disk
around 1.1-1.2G each. I have 24MB of RAM
On the first drive I have a small partition of around 250MB in
fat for Winblows 95 (more that I could ever need) and the rest
is in HPFS with OS/2, and of course a boot manager.
On the second hard disk I have a 64MB swap partition and
a logical partition of around 960MB where I have
Linux RedHat 5.1 (French installation)
I compiled the newer kernel last night. It compiled apparently
without a problem. When I booted on the new kernel it didn't load
any of the modules. I tried several approaches as described by
many people on the net, nothing seemed to work.
I finally dealt with the dissapearing of the preferred link to the
new kernel by commenting out the lines that scrap it in rc.sysinit.
It still didn't load the modules but did create the modules.dep file
on that directory.
I then loaded all the modules by hand with insmod and could mount the
different systems (hpfs, vfat, cdrom). All seem to work very well.
Two little problems :
Let's say I type :"ls asdahajgfajg"
I should be getting this message :
ls: asdahajgfajg: Aucun fichier ou répertoire de ce type
instead of that I get :
ls: asdahajgfajg: Aucun fichier ou r-pertoire de ce type
I don't have that problem inside a shell under X.
The second problem is my connection to the net, it no longer
works. I start out the script as usual with "ifup ppp0" and
it dials allright but after a short while the line goes dead and
it will keep redialing forever unless I shut it up with "ifdown ppp0"
It seems to me that the ppp is broken with this new kernel.
Any idea?
I badly need my sound and the newer kernels seem to be the only ones
that might give that to me. I have not been able to get the ES1869F from
ESS to work at all with the other kernels (2.0.xx)
I haven't checked yet but from the messages I got on the boot Linux
seemed happy with my sound card (at last)

In the kernel setup I left all the default fs which weren't set as
modules to be include in the kernel as the hard disk and floppy.
I put the support for OSS sound in the kernel as there seem to be
a bug in that it would not let me change the interrupt if I choose
a module. It is obvious that it would never work with the default
interrupt 7. I tried with both "make config" and "make xconfig" and
the options are disabled in both cases.
