[2.1.113] What is CHECK_TTY_COUNT warning me about?

I was working via a couple of telnet sessions when this message appeared on my
console:

Warning: dev (03:03) tty->count(0) != #fd's(1) in do_tty_hangup

A few minutes later this message appeared on the console also:

Warning: dev (03:02) tty->count(0) != #fd's(1) in do_tty_hangup

What am I being warned about?

These warnings are enabled in file tty_io.c by the CHECK_TTY_COUNT definition.
I had had 2 telnet sessions open for several hours before the warnings appeared
and continued for several more hours afterward with no further complaints.

I haven't actually used the console or keyboard on this machine (RedHat 5.1) all
day - just telnet sessions. I haven't noticed any impairment in functionality
at all. There are no other messages in /var/log/messages that would indicate
any problems, just those 2 warnings.

So... why am I being warned?

Thanks.
