Tried it - made no difference here (i.e. worked).
PIIX4 on Tyan Titan Turbo ATX-2 motherboard,
hda: QUANTUM FIREBALL ST1.6A, ATA DISK drive (UDMA)
hdc: TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-6002B, ATAPI CDROM drive (PIO, forced DMA)
hdd: ST32531A, ATA DISK drive (PIO)

AMH> Add/fix naming of IDE devices 9-12 {hdi,hdj}, {hdk,hdl} in genhd.c.

Are the major/minor numbers confirmed by some authority?
