Coincidentally I just got three of these Promise Ultra33 boards,
and while the kernel (2.1.113) configures them all, for some reason
the disks on the second and third boards are slow. The driver
probe claims they're all using UDMA, but hdparm gives 13.5 MByte/sec
on the PIIX and the first Promise board (both buses) but only
around 3.5 MByte/sec for the other boards. Can anyone with more than
one Ultra33 confirm? Is there some reason the Promise BIOS shows only
eight devices, by the way? The disks are the 7.2GB Maxtor DiamondMax.

Perhaps this would argue for, say, 10 possible IDE hardware interfaces
(two supplied by the motherboard plus 4*2 from four additional PCI host
adapters), for a total of 20 devices. My reason for playing with
this is to evaluate IDE-based RAID; so far it's quite encouraging.
