Just put the following in lilo.conf

1 root@red:/etc/rc.d# cat /etc/lilo.conf
boot=/dev/hda5
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=75

image=/boot/zImage-2.0.35-4
label=linux-2.0.35-4
root=/dev/hda5
vga=ext
read-only

The vga=ext line is what does 43/50 line mode.
