} But I wasn't trying to kill the machine. I was trying to make the
} X server hang up in a way that is supposed to work correctly.

Then put that sledgehammer away and quit sending it signal 9 (the only signal
it can't possibly handle cleanly). Try sending it a HUP; works like a charm.
