alpha w/ 2.1.11x locks up hard

I've gotten past the VC switch lockup, but now I get occasional lockups
for no particularly good reason. I'm trying to use 2.1.115 compiled
with egcs-19980721. This is a prerelease of egcs 1.1, the compilers with
RedHat 5.1 cannot compile these kernels.

I have slight circumstantial evidence that the hang may related to disk I/O,
but it is not convincing.

I also have circumstantial evidence that the trouble may be the compiler.
I compiled the egcs compiler I'm using with the egcs-1.0.2 from the RedHat
rpm. I did not configure with --disable-hiefa. I will try rebuilding the
compiler a few different ways, and see what (if anything) works.

Make sense?
