2.1.115 umount SMP-returns/UP-hangs

I've noticed that on 2.1.115 umount of any of my local ext2 file systems
hangs in a UniProcessor built kernel, but succeeds in an SMP built kernel
(on a UniProcessor system). By hang, I mean the umount command never
completes - the system is still functional An strace indicates umount()
never returns.

Also halt no longer powers down the system (SMP built kernel - UP never
gets past umount) - is there a new halt somewhere? The one I have is from
SysVinit-2.71-3.

It may be that I haven't upgraded everything I need to. I upgraded almost
everything except for the NFS related stuff - I am running NFS related
daemons. But I'm not actually using NFS. I have the latest mount utils
and libraries.

I'm running a PII on an BX ATrend Mainboard, 128MB, QUANTUM FIREBALL
SE4.3A and ST3.2A. Caldera Open Linux 1.2.1 with

gcc version 2.7.2.3
ld.so-1.9.6.tar.gz
libc-5.4.44.bin.tar.gz
modutils-2.1.85.tar.gz
mount-2.7l
mount-2.7l.tar.gz
ppp-2.2.0f.patch

Havent yet upgraded ldd (1.9.3), binutils (2.8.1.0.13), or Net-tools
(1.33).
