Well here is my best explaination ::

Since there are still folks that run multi-os-booting with Linux
(ie MicroSoft) which are handi-capped and still require an LBA translation
or use disk overlay to see past 540/528 Meg, Linux follows these
guide lines for compatiblity.

Hmm. So far Mark Lord has not answered.
And I am not sure I understand your answer.

I said that the change in question was a very bad idea.
Do you think differently?

You write `these guide lines'. What guidelines are you referring to?

Why do you think that the change in question helps people
that run multi-os? (It certainly doesnt help me.)
In what way do you think it helps such people?
Do you think the change in question has anything to do with LBA translation
other than the fact that it prints " [LBA]" at boot time and the letters LBA
occur in a comment?

(My impression is that it might have something to do with the BIOS
translation that is commonly called `Large', not at all the same as `LBA'.)
