live mods to kernel with gdb

Just wondering why doing 'gdb vmlinux /proc/kcore' is read-only ?

(actually it seems to work pretty weirdly even in read mode on my
machine but that's another story, maybe gdb is cacheing stuff?).

Back in the good ol days (in fairness they were mostly bad ;-) !) when I
used HP-UX, I could just patch kernel symbols to my heart's content, but
for Linux, I read in /usr/src/linux/README that you can't change
values...

(Must confess I didn't try very hard yet btw).
