I can recommend RH5.1 for that purpose. Modutils, binutils, gcc are
up to date, i.e. everything needed to compile a 2.1.x kernel. Only things
that need an update are pppd and net-tools. Just drop in the 2.1.117 tree
and configure/compile/lilo/reboot. You can easily step back to their
original kernel as they store the image in /boot so it won´t get overriden
by "make zlilo".
