I've been having similar problems (I was the one who wrote "Keyboard
timeout" a few days ago). If I'm sitting in console mode long enough,
the system will just spit out "Keyboard timeout" and lock hard.
Sysrq doesn't work, nothing. Nothing spectacular is going on, often
I'm not even typing when it happens. If I go into X, it's almost
guaranteed to happen within the first minute of things. Last night
I booted, logged in, fired up X, opened an rxvt, opened Netscape and
it hung the machine. This all took around a minute.

In my earlier letter, I was concerned that EGCS 1.0.3a was producing
some invalid code for my kernel (2.1.118, now with Andreas's really
nice kernel debugging stuff). Last night I installed a fresh,
clean GCC 2.2.2.3, built my kernel with it, rebooted, and had the lockup
described in the last paragraph. Things are still bad.
Alan, Linus: did something change in the last 3 kernels that would
somehow expose SMP problems with my motherboard? I've been using
SMP kernels for a year now, 2.0 up until about May, 2.1 from then to
now, and I've never had anything of the sort.

I guess I could yank my Matrox Millenium II out and try some other
VGA card, as that's the only piece of hardware that's ever caused me
problems in this machine (older XFree servers, when told to use an M II,
would sometimes lock the machine while probing for RAM. I believe
this is a firmware bug in the Matrox cards).

The Ethernet's already gone; I just have SCSI, IPv4, IDE, vgacon,
serial, parallel, psaux, and some other boring things. I'll attach
my kernel config at the end of this message.

Last night I patched 2.1.118 with Andreas's kernel debugger stuff.
That's the niftyest patch I've ever seen! But it sure doesn't
prevent this funny lockup problem. And, woudln't you know it, I can't
forcably reproduce the lockup in console mode (the only mode where I'd
get trace information) with the idk patch! Oh well, I'll keep on trying.

X doesn't repeatedly lock on my box (on load, that is), or ever panic
on boot.

Here's my .config. I'm using GCC 2.7.2.3 (EGCS 1.0.3a has the same
problem), normal CFLAGS for this CPU type, never get a SIG 11.
This machine was stable and trustworthy all up until 2.1.117:
