OK to comment out 'SMP = 1' in Makefile for 2.1.11[789]?

I just recompiled 2.1.117 with 'SMP = 1' commented out in the top-level
Makefile. There were many warnings about redefined symbols that resulted
from this. On my single-processor machine, the 2.1.117 kernel runs fine
with or without SMP configured. I was just wondering about all of the
compiler warnings during the kernel and module build.

The kernel is a bit smaller without SMP, but are we encouraged to leave
SMP in anyway?
