[help] unforgiving 2.1.118 with a garbaged scsi disk hooked to a aha1542

It seems that I have a garbaged sccsi disk partition table that I can't fix with
fdisk. It returns "Unable to read /dev/sda".

I can boot using linux 2.0.32 (see relevant messages below) but
2.1.118 is not so forgiving. It says:
Partition check
sda: sda1 <aha1542.c: Trying device reset>
times out on the reset, and later chokes because the device is not
initialized.

I have not tried versions in between 2.0.32 and 2.118.1

How can I work around this problem? What is the appropriate forum
to post this question if this one is inapropriate? because this is
clearly not a kernel bug.
I have no backup device so reformatting my disk is not an option.
Any help appreciated.
