Yesterday I got down and tried every sort of kernel, and the lockup is
reproducible under all of them. Even 2.0.x !!!, although the chances
of it happening greatly vary (maybe also depending on the kernel
version)

So, I'm beginning to belive that this is a hardware problem, although
the machine is 100% stable in all other respects.

If this solves the problem, than great! I wouldn't mind skips in the
sound while doing floppy operations, but I _DO_ mind pressing the
reset button.
