ppp connections and chat

I did :
chat -v '' ATZ OK ATDT8563425 CONNECT '' ogin: james word: 12drz
in order to have chat establishing a ppp connection with my Isp..
All I got back is :
ATZ ...it was stuck there for 5 minutes and then it prompt me back to my
root promt. No dialing, no any other message..nothing..
What is wrong ??
I ve already configured the modem..pppd is on my system and the ppp files
are setted correctly.. Help pls..
