automount/volume management

Just wondering about something:
Does Linux have a kernel or user space function similar to Solaris's
volume management (not just autofs)? I am looking for something that
will automount a cd or scsi disk on insertion (not on access), and
when you type "eject <device>" it will attempt to unmount and eject
the media.
