Question on Vortex/Boomerang NICs

I have been having mysterious lockups related to my 3c59x. One fine day,
my machine locked HARD when I tried to start X. I mean no magic SysReq
key, nothing. Didn't respond to pings, it was wedged.

I then booted single user, and X started OK. After starting X, I
proceeded to manually bring up the netwo.... *hang!!!*

I was running 2.1.120-pre3, and fell back to 119, and had no change. Oh
yeah, and I removed the 3c59x driver patches from the 120 pre patches
before applying, as they break the net.

So, why is this card hanging my machine solid when starting X? Anyone
know?
