This weekened I decided to give 2.1.x another try (over 2.0.35) so I
installed and upgraded some of the recommendations in the
Documentation/Changes file (net-tools, modutils, mount, ipchains).
The first thing I noticed is that my system is showing its age.. I had to
redo all the pseudo ttys since they were using the obsolete major numbers.
Now they're all set-up according to the Documentation/devices.txt using
device major 3 for ttyp0-f and so on..
That allowed me to get X11 up and going with rxvt/xterms.
I frequently like to use screen inside a couple of my rxvt windows since
I will login and detach them remotely from day to day when I am at work.
While playing with screen, I noticed that if I used CTRL-A K on the last
virtual screen session while in an rxvt or xterm, it frequently messes up
the rxvt after screen has terminated and displays the message:
[screen is terminating]
SetTTY (fd 3): ioctl failed: Interrupted system callgomer:~$ gomer:~$
The rxvt (or xterm does the same thing) will no longer accept CTRL-C at
all and anything that is typed is no longer echoed. The only recourse is
to run 'tset' to fix it somewhat (CTRL-C is still ignored completely until
I close the rxvt terminal). If I dont forcefully kill screen with CTRL-A K
but rather simply "exit" from the last virtual screen, it works fine every
time. This whole "ioctl failed" deal happens usually after starting and
killing screen with CTRL-A K about 2 times in a row.
This problem does not occur with a 2.0.35 kernel.
I've since tried to upgrade to ncurses 4.2 and recompile screen with
ncurses and libtermcap with the same results.
