I had this happen as well; although I don't suggest it; insmod -f serial
will make the counter -2 .. once it's 0 you can rmmod it; and reload it.
It worked for me; as for stability; I'm unsure.. I couldn't duplicate the
problem; and didn't leave the system running long; just in case..
