AMD K5 cycle counter

When i boot linux-2.1.122 and leave it alone for a while my system
crashes (i run xntpd). It gives a divide error on the second divl
instruction in file arch/i386/kernel/time.c function
do_fast_gettimeoffset. This looks like a problem with the AMD K5, it
appears to halt the cycle counter when idle. I've made a small test
program and it leads to the same conclusion.

When running the test program on the AMD K5 with linux-2.0.35 the cycle
counter does run all the time. If i first boot the AMD with 2.0.35 and
then reboot (no reset/power up) with 2.1.122 the cycle counter also runs
all the time.

I've also tested an intel pentium, this cpu seems to be OK.

If you have any questions/answers please mail me directly as i'm not on
this list.

greetings,

Mark.
