finally the driver gave a timeout error while running lilo
(running 2.0.35).

I just tried the patch on a 2.0.35 UP with a 2940UW, I will try on the 2.1.123 in few minutes and report it in a new message.

It gave me many scsi reset errors while compiling the 2.1.123 kernel.

So, I rebooted with the option aic7xxx=verbose:0xff39 and surprisingly it gave no futher reset errors (at leat in 3 compilations).
