But being the low price at which we can buy way faster and reliable SCSI
adapters nowadays you may have problems to find a volunteer for
maintaining the driver for such an old horse that in real life had gone to
the abattoir years ago.

That's marketing issue. There are still lots of people that think that
the 1542 is a really fast SCSI controller and are ready to buy some. It
is perhaps the fastest of the slowest, but it is actually way slow for any
recent hard disk speed, even for entry level ones.

My experience 4 years ago using a IBM S12:

1542CF: 2.2 MB/second (with some bus on / bus off hack).
53C810: 4.4 MB/second (without any hack).
