Coolness is that in each of three different boards, one an old 486/100
with EFAR chips, one intel FX, one VIA MVP3, the adaptor DMA self-test
fails above 5 MHz. So there we go: what do I get from an 10 MHz SCSI
adapter which can only transfer at 5 MHz and actually yields something
like 1M3 at such intermitting rates that it's necessary to write CDs at
single speed?

Personally, I would like to use my old 1542 as scanner adaptor since
Linux does not (and will not) support this el-cheapo polling DTC-436
SCSI card "16D3" bundled by Teco/Relisys.
