The processor should not sleep. It can hang which can be a sign of a bad
processor or faulty motherboard. Try touching the processor to see how hot
it is at the time of lockup. My girlfriends computer seemed to lock up
every couple of hours and them one day I was trying to solve the problem
internally and damn near burned my finger on the processor (the oversized
fan was working just fine). The Intel 133 was being clocked at 150. This
can cause a sleep mode. This sound stupid but it is possible that either
you over clocked it or was sold an overrated CPU. I clocked it down to 133
and the machine still works today. I call it my Linux gateway. Also, by
changing the clocking of this processor I have found it to run much cooler
and with Linux the processor is actually cold to touch sometimes (not having
to work as hard as it did with Windows 95).
I did try 2.1.125ac1 but there is no difference.
Looks like sometimes it starts sleeping even when I'm typing on the
keyboard.
Summary: AMD K6-2, VIA chipset, APM disabled in the bios and in the
kernel.
