ls /proc/sys. did it twice and it hung both times. ps l shows it's stuck
on sprintf (??). Which I don't understand :)

As for the hdparm'ing a cd-drive failing with modular cd support when
there's no disc in the drive - this behaviour is pretty new, or at least
I'm sure it didn't happen in 2.0.35, and pretty sure it didn't happen in
2.1.117.
