It's non-obvious in a lot of cases - software modems will pretend to be
connected to a (fake) serial port which looks normal under most circumstances.
The best way of telling is to look up the modem in the device manager and use
"driver file details". If there's a 500k .vxd file in there, its a winmodem.

Or you could just take a Linux boot floppy around to see what boot messages it
generates.
