problems with AM53/79C974

Hello all,
I bought a Dawicontrol DC-2974 PCI and found in a mailing list that
AM53/79C974 supports this controller. While using it I found my system to be
locked from time to time for 1 or 2 seconds and a messages logged:
scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 950, scsi0, channel 0, id 1, lun
0 Read (6) 03 c9 d2 26 00

followed by some "AM53C974 register dump"s.
The device is detected at boot up to be a toshiba XM-5301TA cd-rom.
What can I do to avoid this? Is the cd-rom damaged?
