Further to my note the other day:

changing the MTU on the local eth0 interface from 576 to 1500 fixes
the problem with outside websites sometimes not appearing (though
certain others, notably www.news.bbc.co.uk seem very slow). So,
thanks to those who offered help, though this was my own fix...

Should this fragmentation problem not be handled automatically by
the kernel? Or is Windows (the machines that couldn't get the
websites run Win98) not able to handle MTU path discovery?
