AFAIK it means that something has gone wrong, and that is should _not_
"work just fine" ...

Do you have the ippp device entries in /dev ? Did you pass the device
name correctly to ipppd?

BTW, a better place for such queries would be the isdn4linux mailing
list (isdn4linux@hub-wue.franken.de, majordomo-managed).
