OK. Now with new USR Sportster 56k modems on both ends there are NO
problems. I have no idea why the 33.6 modems caused hangs. When I
get a chance I will put one back and dump its ID and BIOS level info
for the record. They are 1996 vintage (pre 56K standard).
My recommendation to anyone with USR 33.6 Sportsters: take up USR
on their US$60 upgrade offer!
