and noone took the time to report this to XFree86 ??? that's free software :-(

I don't read news groups (don't have a online internet connection)
and won't start to gather problem reports all over the internet.

if you're interested in bugs gettings fixed, report them to the autor
(this is no XFree86 thing but IMHO generic `fair use' for free software!).
and if you _like_ those bugs and don't want to loose'em, file a report anyway
because otherwise shit may happen and your beloved bugs get fixed by accident
and you're upset again ;-)

3.3.3 isn't released yet (but really RSN) and I really doubt it will `fix'
this problem as I didn't know about it until now (and now it's too late)...

but anyway, 3.3.3 tries to reset/timeout such polling loops when the chip
locked up. this may help in some/most instances, but it can have other
([more] nasty) side effects when being triggered.

so cross fingers, try 3.3.3 and write more bug reports!
