2.1.128 + AIC-7880 problem

Doug & Linux-kernel readers,

I have a P-166 on an Asus P55T2P4 mobo and an Asus AS-2940UW (Adaptec
2940UW clone w/AIC 7880 chipset). Attached to the SCSI bus is a Quantum
XP32150W 2.1 GB disk on the wide channel and a Sony SDT-5200 on the
narrow. Unfortunately the box is a new conversion so I've only tried
kernel 2.1.127 and 2.1.128 on it, but the past few days under 2.1.128
I've started to see

aborting command due to timeout pid 83000 scsi 0 channel 0 id 1 lun 0
read (6) 09 bf 73 02 00

When this happens the box is basically dead though it continues to route
and masquerade for me. The PID number (obviously) continues to rise,
and the

09 bf 73 02 00

cycles through

09 bf 73 02 00
09 bf 77 02 00
09 bf 7b 02 00

if that helps.

The last time this happened my root filesystem ended up *very* sick.

Is this a kernel or driver issue? What else can I provide to help
debug?

Thanks.
