Seperating kernel archs

I read somewhere, sometime ago, that there was the hint of an idea
floating around to seperate the kernel architectures, in order to
decrease bandwidth and download time. Has anyone looked into this
further?
Forgive my ignorance, I haven't ernestly looked into the logistics of
it, but is it worth it? I ask the gurus: How much time size would it
lessen the package? And is it merely a matter of file removal/"moval"?
If no-one else has, I would be happy to look into this idea. It seems
like a good one for the sheer reduction in bandwidth, considering the
growing numbers of people using the kernel (and the growing number of
lines in it). Hell, it would also give me something to do for the Linux
community (young (28) upstart talk :-).
